Hawaii Sunscreen Ban

The governor of Hawaii officially signed a bill banning sunscreens containing chemicals known to be harmful to coral reefs from the islands. The bill does not go into effect until 1/1/2021.

The bill is mainly targeting oxybenzone and octinoxate. Both chemicals are particularly harmful to juvenile corals, causing DNA damage and issues in coral development.

When purchasing sunscreen, look for the term “reef safe” on the label. Many natural and mineral base sunscreens are great alternatives.
